Dedicated to Karen Dalton as the liner notes show but taking a strikingly different turn musically -- spacious, frayed, instrumental, suggestive of lost backroads and quiet moments of contemplation where the energy elsewhere almost seeps through the air.
Favorite track: Cruelty.
"Bird wings know the wind goes
And sing rock grass water woods to instrument my ears, my tongue
Blossoms bell clapper for a flower
Blown on sweet breathed bone-whistle wind"
Sweet Mother KD, the voice of an angel and the sharp edge only a hard life in the country can give you. These meditations are for you....a study on those time tested melodies....a reflection on what might have been driving you....a rumination on what drives me....and where we meet in the middle on a dark dirt road....banjo in hand.
Not a bad collection -- nothing immediately groundbreaking but as exercises in often contemplative acoustic guitar, zither and piano performances it's another fine reminder of the virtues of understatement. Often fragmentary and spontaneous, sometimes feeling carefully worked out. Sometimes that's all you need! Ned Raggett
